Southern Kyoto is home to Uji, one of the the most historically important area of the country. Uji is the scene of many famous ancient stories. There are stores that have been there for hundreds of years, and the city is know for its awesome tea. The cherry blossom lined train line is absolutely incredibly beautiful when the blossoms are blooming. A breathtaking walk across the bridge that spans Uji river awaits those who get of the train at the end of the line.

Uji is on the JR Nara Line between Kyoto and Nara. From Kyoto it is 17 minutes via rapid train, or about 25 minutes via local, at a cost of ¥230.

Since Uji is a place full of tradition, there are many temples.

  • Byōdō-in (平等院). Famous for its Phoenix Hall (平等院 hōō-dō) — take a sneak preview by looking at any Japanese 10-yen coin.
  • Amagasegawa Dam. Has an outstanding view.
